Reading the portrait
A tour of the Gallery’s permanent collection: investigate the traditional to the unusual in portraiture,
and decode what portraits can be. Discover the role of portraits over time, the signs and symbols used by artists to
communicate with audiences, and the relationship between artist and sitter.
